Minnow Identification

To get a general idea of the fish that inhabit the streams we study we did a minnow identification lab. During this lab we went to Donnelly Park, Thomas Park, Sac and Fox Trails, and Hannah Park to seine. We seined each hour we went to these places then afterwards we would see which kinds of fish we caught and how many we found, then release them back into the water.

How to Seine for Fish

You seine by getting a larger net and with two people, one at each end, drag the net on the bottom of the creek . While you are doing this you want to make sure it is at an angle in the water and that you are going against the current. The reason you go against the current is becasue then the fish that are swimming with the current swim right into your net. Once you go about 10-15 feet you and your partner pick up the net and the bucket holder collect the fish that are in the net.
